Welcome to the Woods

Congratulations: you've just taken your first step into a much larger world. How so? The power to ask, "What if?" is possibly man's greatest gift, for no other creature possesses this ability. Animals accept reality as it appears to them, never questioning the nature of the world with which they are presented. Humans, on the other hand, can not only question reality but also envision a different one. That's right, I'm talking about the human imagination.

Although scientists cannot attribute the imagination to any specific anatomical feature of the human brain, they do know that its possibilities are virtually limitless. The future, the past, the present--they are held in sway by the power of imagination.

My name is Jack Watts. Anyone who knows me knows that I am generally the odd man out. I do not belong to society, as it holds little or no value in my eyes. You laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same. My imagination is my power.

But beyond pure imagination, there is another step. Action. The ability to create. As Walter Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can build it." One of the most powerful ways to create the imagined is through the cinema. Using cameras, props, sets and of course actors, even the most complex of imagined reality can be conveyed to an audience. The real trick is pulling it off.

Like I said--welcome to the Woods.

Past, Present and Future

North Woods Productions was born in the year 2003. Obviously, it is still young. But the makings go back much further. In fact, to the year 1987 of the last millenium--my incept date. I have been experimenting with filmmaking and acting since then. Although I've never considered myself an actor, I have out of necessity made a sincere effort to develope some acting skills, stepping into reality percieved with mind rather than sight to make said transition. To convey images and thoughts and ideas from my mind to those of audiences.

I suppose one day I will no longer need to be in front of the camera, but behind it where I belong. Until that day arrives, here I am--an untriditional actor in untraditional films.

You'll find more about my films in the About Page, but North Woods first film was titled "Shades of Black." A somewhat untraditional detective story. With themes of lost love, cynicism, suicide and murder, a man must confront his inner demons in order to come to grips with reality once again.

The lead character is played by me, and although I've certainly tried to portray the character well, there are actors out there who could have done so much better--unfortunately, though, they expect payment, which I lack. Its debut has yet to be made, on the other hand, so my performance has yet to be judged.

Future films will include, "Sleeping Awake," a short film based in the reality--or rather the unreality--of the Matrix. A young man named Ian Trimble fights to "wake up." I chose this theme because, personally, I believe that we all would do well to "wake up," and in fact find ignorance through percieved knowledge.

A film still in the pre-production phases is "The Order--Volume I," a film based in the near future, when fully functioning lightsabers such as those seen in Star Wars movies hit the market. Bearing these weapons are members of a club, or brotherhood, called the Jedi Order. Inevitably, the formation of the Sith soon occurs, also bearing lightsabers. After several senseless murders between these factions, opposition arises. Lightsabers are quickly outlawed by the authorities. The command is issued that any Jedi who comes into contact with a Sith must engage him in a battle to the death, and visa versa. War is imminent in Volume I, and by Volume II we see all-out battle in the streets all over the country between the Jedi and Gothic-style Sith.

Obviously, great work lies ahead. My ability to imagine is only the beginning.

Dare to Imagine?

If you feel that perhaps you are of the material it takes to not only imagine but to put your thoughts and dreams to the silver screen, then I'm willing to find out for mysef. Actors and editors are always needed, and an experienced rotoscoper will be a must for The Order (or those who are willing to learn). There's no money in the indy business, just the satisfacton that comes with achevement and fulfillment. But if you're willing and if you're able, then email me.
